OSSIAN FRAGMENTS OF ANCIENT POETRY |
‘Ossian Fragments of Ancient Poetry’ is a series of twenty-five large digital prints on canvas based on James McPherson’s’ fact and/or fictional account of ancient Celtic mythology, ‘The Poems of Ossian and Related Works’ (1765). The work combines traditional photographic techniques with digital in order to create a series of artworks that further blur the distinctions between painting and photography. Exploring ideas around the construction of history and national identity (and, as a sub-theme, photography itself), the work questions the role of ‘truth’ associated with these areas. First shown in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in 2002, the exhibition has subsequently toured to many venues, national and international.
